Each Bulgarian mountain has its specific landscape and landmarks. Their tourism development potential is large, both during the summer and the winter. Some of Bulgaria’s winter sports centers are well-known worldwide and attracting large number of tourists from many countries.
Rila, Pirin and the Rhodopes are homes to Bulgaria’s three biggest mountain resorts. All of them offer excellent skiing and snowboarding conditions. The accommodation capacity of these resorts is sufficient and the hotels suit the needs of all tourists – the ones that are on a budget and those looking for luxury. Besides Bansko, Borovets and Pamporovo, Bulgaria has several much smaller ski centers. They are very suitable for beginners and for families having young children. These small resorts combine winter sports opportunities with a chance for nature exploration. Mountains are quite luring during the summer, too. Rila is known for its glacial lakes and for Mousala – the highest peak in Bulgaria and on the Balkans. Pirin has many lakes and beautiful peaks, too. Stara Planina‘s harsh nature and large number of routes turns it into a favorite spot for hikers. The Rhodopes charm with their beautiful mountain villages, rock phenomena and Thracian sanctuaries.
