THE SLAVIC GODS

The foundation of the spiritual culture of the Slavs consists of their pagan religion, which was polytheistic. The prime of place was held by the god of thunder Perun - the master of heavens and the world around. His name is preserved in the names of Pirin, Pernik and the flower perunika ("iris").

Other Slavic deities were: Volos - god of sheep flocks, riches and the home; Svarog - the god of fire and crafts; Dazhbog - the god of fertility; Lada - the goddess of beauty.

The Slavs believed in afterlife, in nymphs, mermaids, wood-nymphs and elves as well as in other supernatural forces. They performed their rituals in the open, near old water springs or votive places. The characteristic Slavic burial ritual was the burning of the bodies and keeping the ashes in urns.
