KOLEDUVANE

Koleduvane [Christmas carol singing] is a custom, performed by men in the night on Christmas Eve (24 December). The Christmas carolers are dressed up in traditional costumes and have special decorations on their caps. They make a round of the homes from midnight on Christmas Eve to the morning on Christmas day and perform ritual Christmas carols for good health, happiness and fertility.

SURVAKANE

Survakane (tapping with decorated cornel twigs) is the most characteristic New Year custom. It is performed by survakari- children aged from 4 to 12 years, who during the very first minutes of the New Year (January) chant wishes for good health and longevity, touching everyone with a survaknitsa - a cornel twig, adorned with woollen pieces of yarn, stringed pop corn, dried fruit, small ring-shaped buns and small coppers.
