MOUNTAINS IN BULGARIA

The diversity of mountains in such a small country as Bulgaria is amazing. Almost half of its territory is covered in mountains; they are 37 in number and vary in area, height and origin. The largest are the Balkan MountainsSredna GoraRilaPirin, and the Rhodopes. Others, more famous for their natural resources and cultural-historic landmarks than for their size, are Vitosha, Lyulin, Plana, Viskyar and Zavalska (from the Plana-Zavalska mountain system); Slavyanka and Stargach (of the Rila-Rhodope massif); Verila and Rui (of the Verila-Rui group); and Osogovo, Belasitsa, Vlahina, Maleshevska and Ograzhden (of the Osogovo-Belasitsa group).
