TRIFON ZAREZAN

Trifon Zarezan (14 February) is a holiday dedicated to vine-growers, pub owners and market gardeners, whose patron saint is the healer Trifon. On this day people go to their vineyards, where the men perform the ritual of pruning the vines: facing the sunrise, the owner cuts a few twigs of vine, pours some wine on to the cut of the vine and makes a blessing for fertility and for warding off of hailstorms.
